Egg freezing
Over the last 40 years, more women are choosing to delay having children. However, after the age of 30 fertility rapidly declines, leaving many to sacrifice their dreams of the family they had envisioned. For this reason, egg freezing has become a popular option to put you in control of your family planning timeline.
The egg freezing process involves three main steps. First, you will require a fertility assessment, which involves blood tests and an ultrasound, so that the doctor can know your present fertility status. Next, you are going to inject yourself with medication that will encourage your ovaries to produce as many viable eggs as possible. During this process, you will need to come to our office every few days to receive regular monitoring (ultrasound and blood work) to assess your response to the medications and to see if doses need adjusting. The last step is the egg retrieval process, where your eggs will be collected and all mature eggs will be vitrified (rapidly frozen) and stored securely until you’re ready to use them. It will not be painful, and the entire process of retrieval takes 2-3 weeks for most patients, but it can vary depending on the specifics of your situation.
You can freeze eggs for as long as you want since frozen eggs don’t have an expiration date. You have a higher chance for a successful pregnancy with the development of the “flash freezing” process, known as vitrification. Fortunately, with the development of vitrification, more than 95% of the frozen embryos survive thawing and are the same quality as fresh embryos.
