The Heroes Behind IVF Success: RSMC Laboratory

PGS Screening with Zero Harm
How does RSMC Lab boost success rates for older embryos to 42.86%? It all starts with attention to detail. During PGS screening, a few cells are extracted from the blastocyst. Many clients worry that extracting these cells may damage the blastocyst and impact embryo development. Before joining RSMC as the Director of the Reproductive Laboratory, Dr. Oum worked for many years at the renowned Columbia University Fertility Center in New York. He gained fame in 1993 for his successful use of intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) and developed various unique techniques for Preimplantation Genetic Screening (PGS), embryo biopsy, and sperm sorting in the lab. His work on embryo development for Asian women has been particularly successful, leading Columbia University to invite him for collaborations in several research fields. Dr. Oum has dedicated his passion and energy to advancing reproductive medicine, including leading the development of vitrification techniques, which are now the best method for egg freezing. His endless exploration of blastocyst culture has led to the exclusive “three-liquid medium” blastocyst culture technique, significantly improving culture success rates to help more families achieve their fertility goals.
The Most Advanced Embryo Culture Laboratory
While typical labs can culture embryos for up to five days, RSMC's lab can culture embryos for up to 7.5 days, making it one of the few labs worldwide with this capability. This advanced technique requires our embryologists to frequently and precisely control all influencing conditions, often returning to the lab at 2 or 3 a.m. to monitor embryo status and adjust environmental conditions. Various external factors can harm developing embryos, so RSMC has designed HVAC systems and high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filters that circulate the air in the lab 20 times per hour, significantly reducing contamination risks.
In addition to genetic screening techniques to ensure embryos are free from genetic diseases—such as Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD) which can exclude 200 types of genetic disorders and Preimplantation Genetic Screening (PGS)—we also use time-lapse imaging systems with AI and big data analytics to identify the highest quality embryos, thereby increasing IVF success rates.
