The Heroes Behind IVF Success: RSMC Laboratory
RSMC's embryo laboratory, spanning over 15,000 square meters, is certified with the highest international laboratory standards, including CPA accreditation and dual certification by the College of American Pathologists (CAP) and the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA). In the IVF process, the laboratory plays a critical role, contributing up to 40% of the overall success rate. The RSMC laboratory has always been a guarantee of IVF success, with the most effective technique to improve IVF success rates being Preimplantation Genetic Screening (PGS), also known as Preimplantation Genetic Testing for Aneuploidy (PGT-A).
PGS (PGT-A) is primarily used to screen the 23 pairs of chromosomes in an embryo to determine if they are normal. The normalcy of chromosomes decides whether the embryo can survive and be born, eliminating embryos with chromosomal abnormalities and reducing the risk of miscarriage. Since many diseases are related to genetic mutations, PGS is a crucial step in the IVF process.

The PGS success rate in RSMC's laboratory has consistently outperformed other clinics, whether it is the average PGS success rate (64.9% vs. 57.12%), egg donation PGS success rate (73.38% vs. 68.88%), PGS success rate for women under 35 (72.57% vs. 66.61%), or PGS success rate for women over 42 (42.86% vs. 25.9%). These four statistics show that RSMC’s lab personnel, techniques, and equipment set the industry standard. Every day, older couples from different countries seek a chance at parenthood through RSMC’s expertise.
The excellent PGS success rate in RSMC's laboratory is crucial to our overall IVF success. Currently, RSMC boasts an average IVF pregnancy rate of over 80%, an egg donation IVF pregnancy rate of over 87%, and a surrogacy pregnancy rate of 90%.
Here is a comparison of PGS success rates between RSMC and other clinics in 2022:
Left: RSMC | Right: Other Clinics
RSMC Average PGS Success Rate: 64.9% VS Other Clinics: 57.12%
RSMC Egg Donation PGS Success Rate: 73.38% VS Other Clinics: 68.88%
RSMC PGS Success Rate for Under 35: 72.57% VS Other Clinics: 66.61%
RSMC PGS Success Rate for 42 and Above: 42.86% VS Other Clinics: 25.9%
PGS Screening with Zero Harm
How does RSMC Lab boost success rates for older embryos to 42.86%? It all starts with attention to detail. During PGS screening, a few cells are extracted from the blastocyst. Many clients worry that extracting these cells may damage the blastocyst and impact embryo development. At RSMC, we use extremely fine needles to precisely extract the outermost and minimal number of cells from the blastocyst, minimizing harm and achieving near-zero damage.
The Pioneer of IVF: Dr. Oum
Before joining RSMC as the Director of the Reproductive Laboratory, Dr. Oum worked for many years at the renowned Columbia University Fertility Center in New York. He gained fame in 1993 for his successful use of intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) and developed various unique techniques for Preimplantation Genetic Screening (PGS), embryo biopsy, and sperm sorting in the lab. His work on embryo development for Asian women has been particularly successful, leading Columbia University to invite him for collaborations in several research fields. Dr. Oum has dedicated his passion and energy to advancing reproductive medicine, including leading the development of vitrification techniques, which are now the best method for egg freezing. His endless exploration of blastocyst culture has led to the exclusive “three-liquid medium” blastocyst culture technique, significantly improving culture success rates to help more families achieve their fertility goals.
The Most Advanced Embryo Culture Laboratory
While typical labs can culture embryos for up to five days, RSMC's lab can culture embryos for up to 7.5 days, making it one of the few labs worldwide with this capability. This advanced technique requires our embryologists to frequently and precisely control all influencing conditions, often returning to the lab at 2 or 3 a.m. to monitor embryo status and adjust environmental conditions. Various external factors can harm developing embryos, so RSMC has designed HVAC systems and high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filters that circulate the air in the lab 20 times per hour, significantly reducing contamination risks.
In addition to genetic screening techniques to ensure embryos are free from genetic diseases—such as Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD) which can exclude 200 types of genetic disorders and Preimplantation Genetic Screening (PGS)—we also use time-lapse imaging systems with AI and big data analytics to identify the highest quality embryos, thereby increasing IVF success rates.

Most people’s impression of RSMC Fertility Center in the U.S. is that of a facility with a physician-managed egg bank and a talent pool of surrogates. To ensure every aspect of the IVF process maintains high quality, RSMC applies stricter criteria for egg donor selection than the FDA regulations, and the acceptance rate for surrogates is as low as 4%. Many attribute the success of having a baby to high-quality donor eggs, surrogates in their prime reproductive years, and skilled physicians, but fewer consider the lab staff who research reproductive technologies daily to incrementally improve success rates, the embryologists who work around the clock caring for embryos, or Dr. Oum, who continues to explore blastocyst culture techniques. While they may not receive the applause and flowers, they are indeed the unsung heroes behind RSMC’s IVF success rates.
From managing its own egg bank and surrogate pool to operating the lab, RSMC aims to provide the most comprehensive one-stop service for those seeking to conceive, ensuring every detail affecting success rates is optimized.
