The Importance of CGT Genetic Disease Screening
What is CGT?
Carrier Genetic Test (CGT) is a screening process designed to detect specific genetic carriers in both partners to prevent the birth of a child with genetic defects. If both partners carry the same recessive genetic mutation, there is a risk of having a child with a genetic disorder. Recessive genetic disorders occur when mutations are present in both copies of a gene. Carriers of recessive genetic mutations typically do not show symptoms and these mutations can be silently passed down through generations without detection. However, when two carriers of the same recessive mutation have a child, there is a 25% chance that the child will inherit the disorder. For those using donor eggs or sperm for IVF, we recommend undergoing CGT as part of the fertility plan. Leading reproductive centers in Singapore offer CGT or Invitae302 testing. It is advisable to inquire about these tests before beginning an IVF cycle,or contact the RSMC for assistance.
If you become pregnant without having undergone CGT, do not worry excessively. Prenatal tests such as amniocentesis, microarray analysis, and chorionic villus sampling (CVS) can still detect recessive genetic disorders in the fetus. We recommend performing CGT before starting IVF treatment, and using genetic screening techniques such as PGS (PGT-A) and PGD during the process to ensure the highest level of health for your baby.
