What is PGS Testing? How does it increase the success rate of IVF?
What is PGS Testing?
PGS testing is also called Preimplantation Chromosomes Screening. It is designed to examine your embryos for chromosomal abnormalities. An embryo biopsy is performed on day 5 or 6 to examine 23 chromosomes to decide whether the embryos are able to survive and develop and prevent the hereditary diseases due to chromosomes. Because many diseases occur due to genetic mutation, PGS is very important. The biggest advantage of the third generation IVF is the screening of hereditary defects, helping the parents with hereditary diseases to have healthy babies. PGS is one of the must-do technologies designed for advanced maternal mothers who undergo IVF. After all , no one wants their generation to have any defects.
How to Conduct PGS?
Before IVf-ET embryo transfer, we extract the hereditary substance of the embryo.Testing is performed on an embryo to determine if it also carries a genetic abnormality. Because only unaffected embryos are transferred to the uterus for implantation, we can prevent hereditary diseases from passing to the next generation. Currently, PGS can prevent 200 heritable genetic diseases.
Who should consider the PGS test?
PGS is highly recommended for women over 38, patients who have experienced recurrent miscarriages, those who have experienced 3 or more failed IVF attempts and parents who want to choose children’s gender.
Benefits Of PGS
1、Screen for inherited genetic disorders or diseases, and increase the chances of success with elective healthy embryo transfer
2、Improve the success rate of pregnancy success for patients pursuing IVF treatment, especially patients with advanced age.
3、To identify the embryos genetic gender, parents can choose the sex of their baby before implantation.
How PGS Improves IVF Success Rates?
PGS is carried out to check embryos for chromosomal abnormalities before they are transferred, which enormously reduces the risk of miscarriage within the first three months of conception. Chromosomal disorders of the transferred embryos are the main cause of IVF failure. With the help of PGS, patients can select the healthiest embryos prior to embryo transfer and increase the pregnancy success rate up to 80%. Currently, PGS and PGD can exclude more than 200 genetic diseases.
If your embryos are transferred to the womb of the surrogate, PGS testing is strongly recommended by our doctors. In the United States, there are no restrictions on using PGS for gender selection, unlike in most parts of Asia and many other countries. For instance, gender selection is not allowed in Singapore.
How Much Does PGS Cost?
PGS is an additional lab cost to the IVF cycle in the amount of $2500 for the biopsy and $250.00 per embryo for genetic testing.
PGS Testing in Singapore
In Singapore, only couples with medical needs are allowed to undergo PGS testing, such as those with certain genetic mutations, chromosome abnormalities, and other disease risks. Couples who require PGS must obtain permission from the health department to undergo this technology. When applying for permission, couples need to provide a doctor's certificate to prove that they have a medical need for PGS. Gender selection is prohibited by law in Singapore, so PGS cannot be used for this purpose.
Other Unignorable Functions of PGS
Besides preventing chromosomal abnormalities resulting from heredity and advanced reproductive age. PGS can also increase pregnancy rate and lower miscarriage rate. The parents who have experienced 3 or more failed IVF attempts or recurrent miscarriages should consider PGS.
If we use the embryo passing PGS, the pregnancy rate can be up to more than 80%. We also suggest our clients collect the embryos passing PGS before undergoing surrogacy in America. In addition, Intended Parents can know their child’s gender through PGS instead of using the XY Sperm Separation. In Taiwan, gender selection is banned. We should follow the country’s laws when we conduct artificial reproduction.
