Is Amniocentesis Required for Surrogacy?
Surrogacy does not require amniocentesis.For surrogacy, the surrogate mother does not need to undergo amniocentesis. After the surrogate mother has undergone the implantation of embryos that have passed PGS (now known as PGT-A) genetic screening, a Non-Invasive Prenatal Test (NIPT) is conducted between weeks 9 to 13 of pregnancy. NIPT checks for abnormal chromosome numbers in the baby and can detect conditions such as Down syndrome, Edwards syndrome, Patau syndrome, and others, with an accuracy of 97% to 99%. NIPT is performed by extracting blood from the surrogate mother and does not carry the risk of miscarriage or preterm labor associated with amniocentesis.
